42 Hours in The Wollombi Wanderer

We arrived on Friday night just before sunset and were very surprised at how private the cabin is and at the same time so close to the road and the Wollombi town.

We relaxed and enjoyed the sunset on that first night and then decided to take ourselves and the puppy for a drink and dinner but by the time we got to the town, every place that served food was closed and the closest open place would be a 30min drive to Cessnock. After a couple of beers and light snacks at the Wollombi Tavern we were ready for a night of good sleep in the soft sheets of the cabin.

The morning came and lazily we observed our Kangaroo friends jumping right in our yard from the comfort of the beds with a cuppa’ coffee.

The program for the day was to explore wineries and source the food and drinks for that night. To ensure we had enough energy and a solid “bed” in our stomachs to undertake a wine tasting session, we headed to Polina’s Café in Cessnock for a gorgeous brunch and another tasty coffee.

First stop on our wine tour was Piggs Peak Winery situated in Pokolbin. The venue was stunning, the service was outstanding and the wine to die for! We couldn’t resist but buying a couple of their wines to take home!

For our second stop we decided to head over to the Hunter Valley Smelly Cheese Shop and grab a fancy piece of cheese and chutney to go with our wines later. This place has also a few other shops and restaurants where you can relax and enjoyed the view and stock up on resources for your party.

Third on our list and to conclude our wine tour was Carrilion Wines in Mount View. With vines stretching down and over the hills almost as far as the eye can see this is a must do! There’s a restaurant where you can have some food with a view, but we’ve decided to stick to our mission—wine tasting, and boy we were not disappointed! Again, we couldn’t resist but getting another pair of bottles of wine at this winery. Their wines are diverse and carry years and years of knowledge and expertise that you can taste in every sip. Plus, the sommelier was very helpful in answering all our questions.

Amid our tour, and to avoid missing out on a proper dinner again, we decided to pre-order a pizza from Panino Café Restaurant so, on our way to the cabin, we also picked up the most delicious and fresh pizza to go with our spread by the property.

Now that we had local wine, cheese, and pizza it was time to sit back, enjoy the sunset and light up the fireplace whilst gazing at a sky full of stars unravelling above us.

The next morning as we woke up to another relaxing view over the greenery outside the cabin, we decided that we should explore the rest of the town before heading home. We enjoy a good brunch, so the obvious choice was Myrtle & Stone. The service was very warm, the food was out-of-this-world delicious, and you just can’t go to Wollombi and not pay a visit to these guys!

If you’re feeling like picking up a souvenir, a treat, or a gift from your stay then you must check out Twine Home Store where you’ll find everything from a mug to beard oil and scented candles!

This concluded our weekend in Wollombi but our puppy and us will keep the memories of a great time and will be sure to return!
